We know that good content is important for a healthy website. In concept, that makes sense, but in practice, it’s a little harder to execute.
How do you come up with good ideas to write about? How in-depth should it go? What’s the best way to run a blog?
These are all questions we’ll address – read on to learn more about building a strong blog for your website.
How to come up with incredible, engaging blog topics
One of the hardest things to do when running a blog is constantly coming up with ideas that are interesting and engaging. This is especially true for people who run their site by themselves.
The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to come up with the ideas – let your reader base and your competitors do the work for you! If you want your blog to rank well, you’ll need to create content that people want to read, so it would make sense to get the ideas straight from the people asking for them.
One trick to come up with new content ideas is to comb through industry forums on Reddit and look for good content topics or questions that have generated a lot of buzz.
You can then use that as a springboard to create an informational piece of content that people want to read.
Another way to come up with unique ideas is to look at what content your competitors have created, and then do it better.
For example, let’s say you’re in the business of pillow making and your competitor created a blog post about how to choose the best pillow, and it’s ranking high. You check the blog post out to see why it ranks so high, and it turns out they have a 10 step process to finding the right pillow.
This is your opportunity to create a better piece of content that can outperform this.
Writing one piece of well-researched, informational content will be more valuable to you then writing 10 pieces of hurried content. In the example of the pillow competitor, you could create something like, “25 Things You Need to Know About Buying a Pillow”. That would naturally provide more information about buying a pillow than your competitor, which would set you up to outrank them for an overlapping keyword, and may even result in higher pillow sales for you as a result.
How good does my content need to be to rank?
As you saw in the pillow competitor example, in-depth content will be what appears higher in the search results. The most important thing you can do for your website is to avoid skimping on engaging content.
Representatives of Google have also stressed the importance of high-quality content. You should always aim to “wow” your website visitors with the quality of content you’re providing. It would be tempting to focus on the quantity of posts, especially since other media platforms like YouTube take quantity into account. However, on the web and in terms of ranking, quality content will always win.
All this is to stress the importance of taking your time with content creation. Make sure you are doing the proper amount of research, taking the time to make quality edits, and answer all the questions that could arise from your content. Having a full-bodied piece of content with those pieces in place will ensure a high ranking for your website.
How to run a successful blog
Now that we’ve covered how to create the best content on the web, how do you run your blog in a way that works with the content? What we need is engagement – getting people to talk about your content is just as important as getting people to read it.
After posting new content, you’ll want to make sure that you engage with your readers by:
- Answer comments, emails, and look out for mentions of the content on the web to engage with. Your job is to keep the conversation about your content moving as long as possible.
- Include social share buttons. Make it as easy as possible for your blog readers to share the content you produce with their friends. You want your blog content to reach as many people as possible to increase the probability of online buzz.
- Don’t limit yourself to only communicating on your blog and about your blog. It’s just as important for you as the blog author to get off of your website and engage in other industry forums and blogs. You may even find some more content ideas!
